School Library

Specification

  • The library was re-arranged with child-centric books.
  • Furniture was provided to make the students comfortable while reading.
  • We purchased books from Pratham and received many from Goonj.

Impact

  • Students are empowered with bilingual storybooks in Odia-Kui and Odia-Saura received from Pratham books for promoting tribal languages.
  • Teachers were given training on “How to Use Library” by educationists Nabanita Deshmukh and Bappu Deshmukh.

Kalpanadham

Specification

  • It literally means the “House of Imagination”
  • Initiated by SBI YFI fellow Shalini Krishnan,it is a place that would inspire kids to think out-of-the-box and encourage them to explore, innovate and improvise.

Impact

  • Well-known artists and educationists have come to the village and conducted workshops for the kids.Work is underway to transform the studio into a fully functional state-of-the-art centre for design.
  • We have had two students from the studio winning the “International Child Artisit Award” and the students creations have been showcased at different art exhibitons in Bhubaneswar.

School Computer and English Classes

Specification

  • An activity & event-based course is introduced for class 7 to class 10 to empower the students with communication & writing skills.
  • Special computer & English classes for classes 9 and 10 have been initiated by SBI YFI fellow Sharbani & Ishan. It has extensive use of visual aids, innovative assignments, and activities (such as badge-making, show and tell, field classes, etc.) in an enabling classroom environment

Impact

  • Students have started the use of English words in speech. Also, there has been a marked improvement in the English writing skills of the students.
  • It is helping school-going adolescents understand the world around them, and realize their human potential, through discussion on 10 topics: World; Identity; Gender and Sex; Language; Law and Equality; Science; Question Everything; Money; Art; Story.

Constructive Entertainment with Theatre and Drama

Specification

  • School Clubs: Science Club, Movie Club, Poetry Club, Drama & Theatre Club.
  • Students are selecting social issues as their theme and performing them in school.
  • Robotics workshop at “Kalpanadham” based upon the works of Arabind Gupta completed. Students have developed many working models to understand various scientific theories.

Impact

  • It creates awareness among the students.
  • It helps in creating the individuals who influence their surroundings with their leadership abilities and values for the betterment of society.
  • It increases scientific nature among the students.

Young World

Specification

  • Child-specific weekly newspaper by “The Hindu” Group. It is a complete supplement for children.
  • Offering an interesting blend of education and entertainment (Edutainment).
  • It has various themes on different pages.

Impact

  • It improves the English learning and English reading abilities of the students.
  • Students can participate in various competitions and showcase their work at the national level.

Khel Vikas (Sports)

Specification

  • Our students belong to marginalized Adivasi communities so that can’t afford to buy sports shoes and other essentials. 
  • GVRS collaborated with Goonj and received sports materials to implement compulsory sports in the school for all the students.

Impact

  • Girls have started playing volleyball, cricket and football, previously, only played by boys.
  • A sports curriculum has been developed to encourage the participation of students in a variety of games 

Learning Democracy

Specification

  • To inculcate the understanding of democratic ways of functioning and non-violent ways to resolve conflicts and solve local issues, sessions on democratic values were undertaken.
  • The voting process, responsibilities of the voters were taught.

Impact

  • A student cabinet was elected through a voting process. This student cabinet takes the responsibilities of activities around the school. 
  • Regular meetings of the cabinet are taken to resolve school issues
